Swim Training – New Venue Update

Swimming training at Westminster School has now ceased. We no longer have lanes booked there on Tuesdays. Instead, the club has lanes booked for members at the State Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Marion on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm-9:00pm. The lanes are reserved, but members are required to pay the entry fee to the centre. A reciprocal agreement is being negotiated with the Aquatic Centre which may result in benefits for both members and the club, however, such an arrangement is not yet in place. Members will be advised when arrangements are finalised. Cheers, Dave.

Congratulations to Somerton’s newest Bronzies; a little chilly in the water today but all survived and passed their assessment. Well done Charlie Fletcher, Jesse Tarasuik, Matt Book, Holly Tull and Lucy Smith. Thank you to the Assessors, Steven Rypp (West Beach) & Karen Willmott (Seacliff). A big thanks to IRB driver, Maddy Mcbride for providing water cover. Congrats also to Lucy Manning who passed her Bronze on Thursday night at Seacliff. And finally thanks Rob for being a great instructor!!!

Junior Presentation Night – This Friday 22nd March 2013

Just a reminder that the Junior Presentation Night is this Friday at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre, 443 Morphett Road, Oaklands Park (near Marion Shopping Centre). Entry into the function room is through the main entrance. Please mention at the front desk that you are attending the Somerton Junior Presentation Evening and go through the speedstyles left and up the lift to the function room. It will be well signed. There will be a cash bar in the function room, but no food available. Aplications Open For RWC Operators Support Service Crew (Jet Ski)

The Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Service conducts regular surveillance patrols and rescue missions in the Metropolitan, Mid South and Far South Coast areas. The RWC Service works closely with the volunteer beach patrols of clubs and actively supports the SLSSA strategy of making South Australian beaches safer. The Service works closely with other support service groups eg, Lifesaver Jet Rescue Boats and Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter Rescue Service. We are currently seeking applications from suitably qualified and proficient Surf Life Savers to undertake training and operational duties as part of this Service. This is a demanding and challenging position. As a RWC Operator you will be expected to complete rostered volunteer RWC patrols on weekends and public holidays, attend training sessions …

Somerton Juniors Finish 4th At Junior State Titles

There is an Apply First Aid course going ahead for members on Sat 9 Feb, 2013. There are 5 places left and any member wishing to complete their Bronze Medallion this season or early next season should do an Apply First Aid course ASAP. Beach Flags Training Starts Monday Night

Assessor Training Course

State Centre will be running an Assessor training course on Saturday 9 February and Sunday 10 February (attendance on both days is required for the course). Any member wishing to complete this course must be a registered member at Somerton, be over 18 years of age, hold the award they wish to assess and also be a Training Officer for the award they wish to assess. Somerton SLSC To Host Southern States Challenge

Competition starts at 0900am Saturday 12th January 2013 – Somerton Beach, SA. What is The Southern States Challenge? The Southern States Development Camp and Challenge is held annually and includes South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. The venue moves state to state each year and Somerton was fortunate to be selected this year along with the SA Aquatic Centre, Marion as venues for competition. A Development Team includes competitors from U/13, U/14, U/15 age groups. The purpose of the Development Team is to identify and coach future Surf Life Saving star athletes. While most of us were sitting around on Christmas eating ourselves silly, a few Somerton clubbies were down on patrol keeping our beaches safe.
