During the week of the 10th -13th of July Surf Lifesaving SA held the Flinders Youth Development Camp at Edowie Station, 50 kms north of Hawker. The intention of the camp is to take young lifesavers out of their comfort zone of the beach and to present some challenges to broaden their horizons. This is a continuation of the development process for the SLSSA youth which also includes opportunities at 11 to 14 years old to attend camps at Encounter Bay. Fourteen surf lifesavers, aged 14 to 17, and five supervisors, lead by Steve Cornish, made the trip. SLSSA held their annual Awards of Excellence on Sunday 5th August at a luncheon held at Port Noarlunga SLSC. Somerton SLSC had nominated a number of members for various awards. It is with pride that Mel Millsteed was the worthy recipient of SLSSA Volunteer of the Year Award. Unfortunately, Mel was unable to attend the Awards of Excellence function due to illness but President, Steve Miller, gratefully accepted the award on her belhalf. Somerton performs at National Pool Rescue Championships

Somerton SLSC’s Pool Rescue Team put in an amazing performance at the National Pool Rescue Championships held recently at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre. They finished equal 23rd with neighbouring club, Brighton SLSC, on 27 points. A big thank you must go to John Fielding who co-ordinated the competitiors and events with the assistance of Mark Williams and Barry Jones. Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club has won the 2012 Australian Surf Life Saving Pool Rescue Championships on 223 points following an action packed final day of competition at the South Australia Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Adelaide. Not far behind, Northcliffe SLSC finished in second place on 204 and Wanda SLSC finished narrowly in third with 203.5 points. More …
